The Future of Dementia Care in the UK

Friday 11 February 2011

Thorpe Park Hotel, 1150 Century Way, Thorpe Park, Leeds, LS15 8ZB

With the Alzheimer's Society estimating that within a short period of time, approximately 75% of people living in a care home environment will have dementia, we pose the question:

"Can the long term care private sector meet the growing demand?"

Adapting Existing Businesses/Training/CQC/New Build Facilities/Innovative Ideas/The Funding of Dementia Care

Co sponsors DC Care, Lupton Fawcett LLP and Santander Corporate Bank hosted a Question Time Seminar at the Thorpe Park Hotel in Leeds on Friday, 11th February 2011.

The event attracted many care home operators and professionals from throughout the North of England and featured renowned guest speakers. Acting as ‘David Dimbleby’ for the day was the Pinder Business Valuers and Surveyor’s charismatic Director Jon Chapman. Questions were posed to the panel which consisted of Mr Martin Green, Chairman of The English Community Care Association (ECCA), Mr and Mrs Firth, Directors of the Tameside based care operator Meridian Healthcare plus Paul Edwards, Head of Training and Development at Bradford Dementia Group at Bradford University.

The seminar was very well received with many attendees suggesting that it become an annual event.

Commenting on behalf of the sponsors Anita Allen, Director of DC Care said; "As agents specialising in the long term care sector we are very aware of the growing demographics and increased requirement for the sector to develop innovative ways of operating care facilities providing good care for dementia sufferers. This was an ideal opportunity, working with other professionals to explore in an ‘open’ forum some of the issues regarding regulation, staff training, safe guarding and all in the light of the current restrained economic climate in Health and Social services."

Dan Corker, a Director in the specialist Healthcare team at Lupton Fawcett LLP, commented: "There are currently approximately 750,000 people in the UK suffering from diseases and conditions which result in the symptoms that have become known as Dementia and it is anticipated that this will rise to 1,000,000 by 2025. Given this increase, we anticipate that the provision of care to these people will comprise an ever increasing proportion of the services provided by our clients in the social care sector. We were therefore very happy to co-sponsor this event with DC Care and Santander and hope that the extremely eminent panel of experts enabled the audience to have a better understanding of this debilitating condition and how we can best serve those that suffer from it in the future."

Santander’s Corporate Banking Division in Leeds was represented on the day by Richard Dorsey, Sean Burke, Jo Phipson, Darren Smith and David Watts. Richard said "Many care specific events are London based and we were delighted as a bank with true specialism in the sector to be involved with this ‘Northern’ seminar. Whilst scheduled to finish at midday with a buffet lunch thereafter we were glad to see so many attendees stay for a few hours thereafter to chat with the panellists and other guests – in our opinion that is a really good indicator of a successful event."
